MUS. Caractérisé par la polytonalité. Musique, oeuvre polytonale. Dans le passage de la polytonalité au style consonant, il y a un écueil: les jeunes musiciens n'évitent pas toujours certaine platitude. Il peut se faire qu'un accord parfait sonne pauvre, sans accent, plat en un mot, après une agrégation polytonale très fournie (Arts et litt., 1935, p.34-14).
REM. 1. Polytonalisme, subst. masc. Synon. moins usuel de polytonalité. V. bi(-)tonal ex. 1. 2. Polytonaliste, subst. masc. Compositeur qui recourt à la polytonalité. Ainsi, les polytonalistes les plus avérés savent revenir au style consonnant (Ch. KOECHLIN, in R. musicale, mars 1924, p.207 ds QUEM. DDL t.15).
